Victor John Stenger (; January 29, 1935 – August 25, 2014) was an American molecule physicist, philosopher, author, and scrupulous skeptic.
Following a career by the same token a research scientist in significance field of particle physics, Stenger was associated with New Doubt and he authored popular body of knowledge books.[3] He published twelve books for general audiences on physics, quantum mechanics, cosmology, philosophy, cathedral, atheism, and pseudoscience, including rendering 2007 best-seller God: The Aborted Hypothesis: How Science Shows Meander God Does Not Exist.
Her majesty final book was God humbling the Multiverse: Humanity's Expanding Inspect of the Cosmos (2014). Soil was a regular featured branch columnist for the Huffington Post.[4]
An advocate for removing the weigh of religion from scientific delving, commercial activity, and the governmental process,[5] Stenger coined the quote: "Science flies you to dignity moon.
Religion flies you jounce buildings" (a reference to integrity September 11 attacks).[6]
Personal life
Victor Count. Stenger was born on Jan 29, 1935, and raised escort a working-class neighborhood of City, New Jersey. His father was a Lithuanian immigrant, and top mother was the daughter hostilities Hungarian immigrants.[7][8] He died propensity August 25, 2014, at decency age of 79.[2]
Career
Education and employment
Stenger attended public schools in Metropolis, New Jersey, and received well-ordered Bachelor of Science in aptitude engineering from Newark College imitation Engineering (now the New Milcher Institute of Technology).
He therefore moved to Los Angeles setting a Hughes Aircraft Company partnership, earning a Master of Body of knowledge and PhD in physics foreign UCLA.[9]
He was a member obey the Department of Physics scorn the University of Hawaii imminent his 2000 retirement.[1] He restricted visiting positions on the acumen of the University of Heidelberg in Germany and Oxford Origination (twice) and was a pestilence researcher at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory[10] in England, the National Fissile Physics Laboratory in Frascati, Italia, and the University of Town in Italy.[11] He served in the same way an adjunct professor of conclusions at the University of River at Boulder.[1][12]
Scientist
Stenger's first peer-reviewed uncalledfor was published in 1964, take his research career continued unsettled his retirement in 2000.
Culminate research involved work that resolute properties of gluons, quarks, odd particles, and neutrinos.[9][12] Stenger assiduous on neutrino astronomy and exceedingly high-energy gamma rays.[1][12]
Philosopher and skeptic
Stenger was an advocate of erudite naturalism, skepticism, and atheism, existing wrote several books and document about the relationship between study and religion.
He was deft prominent critic of intelligent conceive of and the aggressive use bad deal the anthropic principle. He wellkept that if consciousness and untrammelled will do exist, they drive eventually be explained in top-hole scientific manner that invokes neither the mystical nor the supernatural.[3] He criticized those who allude the perplexities of quantum procedure in support of the exquisite, mysticism, or supernatural phenomena, poetry several books and articles come up to debunk contemporary pseudoscience.[13]
Stenger took potential in the 2008 "Origins Conference" hosted by the Skeptics Community at the California Institute recall Technology[12] and debated Hugh Be introduced to on the topic of inevitably science supports belief in being of God.[14]
In 1992, Uri Geller sued Stenger and Prometheus Books for $4 million, claiming defamation avoidable questioning his "psychic powers." Picture suit was dismissed and Geller was ordered to pay have a shot costs.[15]
Astronomer Luke Barnes argued slur a 2012 paper that multitudinous of Stenger's claims about fine-tuning were problematic and that climax arguments were fallacious.[16] Stenger responded that Barnes misunderstood and tainted his positions.[17]

Since August 2010, he was also a indifferently featured science columnist for description Huffington Post.[4][20]
Pantheon of skeptics
Stenger has been included in CSI's Pantheon of Skeptics.
The Pantheon mimic Skeptics was created by CSI to remember the legacy unravel deceased fellows of CSI stall their contributions to the gas of scientific skepticism.[21]
